History

The Ukrainian Catholic community in Great Britain traces its roots to Ukrainian immigrants who settled in Manchester from the 1890s. The Apostolic Exarchate for Ukrainian Catholics was erected on 10 June 1957 for England and Wales. On 12 May 1968 its territory was expanded to the whole of Great Britain (excluding Northern Ireland). Holy Family Cathedral in London was acquired in June 1968. The Exarchate was elevated to eparchial status on 18 January 2013. The Belarusian Mission was attached in 2014; Slovakian and Hungarian Missions in 2017. Bishop Hlib Lonchyna resigned on 1 September 2019. Fr Mykola Matwijiwskyj served as Apostolic Administrator until Bishop Kenneth Nowakowski was appointed on 15 January 2020.
